Free-Motion Machine Quilting

Beyond Beginning

One Full Day Class.

Exploration of this wonderful technique begins with an in-depth discussion of materials, equipment and working methods. After extensive demonstrations students practise thetechniques and sew a range of samples including spirals which grow into flowers, clamshells which become brick designs and feathers which evolve into all-over sophisticatedstippling. They will leave the class feeling inspired, confident and keen to continueimproving their skills. What you need to bring with you:

  1. Sewing machine and extension cord. You must be able to drop the feed dogs onyour machine. Please bring your slide on tray/extension table and sewing machineinstruction manual with you. If your machine has a knee bar for lifting the presser footplease be sure to bring this.A straight stitch/fine fabric plate is also very useful for free-motion work.
  2. Free-motion foot. An open-toe type is preferable as this gives you good visibility at theneedle point. Don’t worry if your free-motion foot is the full circle type.
  3. Four 100% cotton quilt sandwiches. Preferably pale coloured plain fabric and of fatquarter size. The wadding is best if it is low loft (high loft 100% polyester wadding isdifficult to use for free-motion work). Please put a few pins to hold the layers togetherbut don’t tack these sandwiches. We will be transferring some designs from printedpaper to the fabric by placing a layer of fabric on top of the paper - so please checkthat your fabric is not so dense or dark that this is not possible. Thank you!
  4. A small selection of sewing threads. 40 weight rayon or polyester threads are optionalextras. Thread that contrast with your fabric is a good idea because it is easier to seewhat you are sewing!
  5. Quilt marking pens or pencils (washable type)
  6. Scissors for paper and fabric.
  7. Hand and machine needles to match your chosen threads.
  8. Paper, notepad and pencils.
  9. A cushion to sit on is a good idea.
  10. A long ruler.
  11. A free-motion slider mat (such as a ‘Supreme Slider’) is optional. If you have one please pop it in.
