Embroidered Landscapes with African Strip Cloth
We will be creating a landscape based on your memories of a favourite place on piece of West African Strip cloth, using a variety of white/ cream fabrics for raw edge applique and adding the colour and details of the landscape with hand embroidery stitches. We’ll first sketch out a rough plan of the landscape, using a variety of marks to add colour/ texture to the landscape, and then translate this into stitch.
Please bring the following:
Pictures of Landscapes - own photos if possible, so you have experienced the landscape, you will be translating into stitch.
Tracing paper or copy paper
Pencil / pens
Note book / sketchbook
Paper scissors
Basic Sewing kit to include: Fabric Scissors, small embroidery scissors, pins, needles etc,
A variety of white/cream fabrics in different weights & textures – Silks, viscose satins, wool, cottons, velvets etc. Offcuts from other projects will be fine.
A variety of threads (cottons, silks, viscose), from machine cotton, perle, cotton a broder, stranded – in the colours of your landscape. So, lots of greens plus other colours.
You may like to bring a few small beads to embellish your landscape.
I will bring the following:
Strip cloth – cost £1.75 per half metre (£3.25 per metre)
I will have lots of fabrics and threads available if needed
If you would prefer not to use the strip cloth, please bring a 12 – 15cms wide x 0.5metre long piece of linen, or similar weight white/cream cloth to use as the background.
